The theatre seats up to 20.000 people and gladiators were participating fight contests here till 404 AD.  Nowadays it is used for various performances and festivals.

The triumph arch of the Sergi, also called Porta Aurea, has inspired many artists, including Michael Angelo who made a drawning of it.  The arch was erected between   29-27 BC to embellish the entrance of the main street that was leading to the forum.

Today this pedestrian street is one of the most entertaining in town.

The temple of August, dating from the 1st century  AD,  is imposing with a portico consisting of six Corinthian columns and decorated with a beautiful frieze.

Many remainders of the past are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Istria, which retraces the history of the peninsula from prehistorical times till Middle Ages. Also remarquable are the cathedral of Saint Thomas and the church of Saint Nicholas in Castropola street.
